Herbert E. Ramey, Jr.

Mr. Herbert E. Ramey, Jr., 81, of Waynesboro, MS passed away peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2022 at Wayne General Hospital in Waynesboro, MS surrounded by his family. Born on Monday, July 7, 1941 to the late Herbert E. Ramey, Sr. and Ruth Clanton Ramey, he was a lifelong resident of Waynesboro, MS where he was a member of Waynesboro First Baptist Church and an integral part of the local business community.

   Beginning as a teenager, Mr. Ramey worked with his father and brother in Waynesboro, MS to establish and then expand Ramey’s grocery store locations across southern Mississippi and Alabama.  Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the grocery business and was proud to have his son and son-in-law continue the tradition of serving the grocery needs of local communities.  Loved by all those who knew him, he had a passion for life and enjoyed spending his days at the grocery store, farming, hunting, fishing, visiting the beach, cheering on Alabama football, watching the markets, having a nice glass of wine and sharing quality time with his ever-expanding family.

   Mr. Ramey is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Gilbert Ramey; father, Herbert E. Ramey, Sr.; mother, Ruth Clanton Ramey; son, Gilbert Brian Ramey; brother, James Franklin "Jimmy" Ramey.

   He is survived by his three children, Kimberly Ramey Ford (Mike) of Waynesboro, MS, Herbert Bradford Ramey (Charlene) of Purvis, MS, Heather Ramey Haley, M.D. (Chris) of Fairhope, AL; sister, Ouida Draughn of Waynesboro, MS; nine grandchildren, Nathan Ford (Kristen) of Brandon, MS, Holly Bishop (Alex) of Franklin, TN, Maggie Ford of Nashville, TN, Taylor Ramey (Kristen), Ford Ramey (Laken), Lily Ramey all of Purvis, MS, Patrick Haley, Sam Haley, Ramey Haley all of Fairhope, AL; three great grandchildren, Charlie Kate Ramey, Mary Ford Ramey, Parker Ramey all of Purvis, MS.

   Visitation for Mr. Ramey will be held from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Monday, August 8, 2022 at Waynesboro First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, MS. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, August 8, 2022 at Waynesboro First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, MS with Dr. Steve Smith officiating. Interment will be in Serenity Gardens Cemetery in Waynesboro, MS.

   In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to The University of Alabama, Herbert Ramey Endowed Scholarship, Box 870101, Tuscaloosa, AL 35486 to fund a scholarship awarded to University of Alabama students from Mississippi with preference given to those from Wayne County  [link at the bottom of the page].
