Dr. Vivian Lamar Dearmon, 82, a retired educator and major in the United States Air Force Reserve, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. Dr. Dearmon was born in Millry, AL, on May 30, 1928. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (Mathematics) degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. In further study, he received Master's level certification in the areas of guidance and counseling. In August 1975, he received his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in educational administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, at which time he met "the girl of his dreams," Alice Smith Dearmon. His work experiences in the field of education included serving as a mathematics instructor, guidance counselor, and elementary school principal. He also held a position as electronics instructor at both Keesler Air Force Base and Redstone Arsenal. In addition, he was a former Superintendant of Education for the Washington County Public School System. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesboro. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having attained the rank of Major in the air Force Reserve. While in the Air Force, he was assigned to the field of electronics. After leaving the Air Force, he served as senior field engineer in electronics as a civilian. Dr. Dearmon was a highly compassionate and innovative individual who, having struggled against poverty at an early age, dedicated his career to helping young people obtain scholarships and financial aid to pursue a college education. A gentle and loving family man, he died peacefully after a long and happy life spent in devotion to "his girls," wife Alice and daughter Mary Beth. Survivors include the following: wife of 34 years, Alice Smith Dearmon of Millry, AL; daughter, Mary Beth Dearmon of Mobile, AL; sisters, Voncille Smith of Columbia, MS, Beth Lassiter of Chatom, AL, and Dorothy Ellzey of Ellisville, MS. He is preceded in death by the following: parents, Sol Richmond and Ada Mae Dearmon; brother, Davis Dearmon; father-in-law, John Robinson Smith; mother-in-law, Margie Mangum Smith. Visitation for Dr. Dearmon will be at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, MS, on Sunday, December 19, 2010 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Graveside services are scheduled for Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Magee Cemetery in Magee, MS.
