Martha Kay
Thornton
September 9, 1953 – June 13, 2025
Martha Kay Thornton, 71, of Waynesboro, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025. Born in Laurel in 1953 to Johnny Pat Thornton and Mary Lynn Young Thornton, Kay spent most of her life in Waynesboro. She also lived in Alabama and Georgia, where she developed a passionate love for the Georgia Bulldogs. Kay was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Roll Finley (Bradley) of Liberty, SC; her son, Nicholas Roll (Amanda) of Laurel, MS; and her brother, Donnie Pat Thornton (Karen) of Waynesboro, MS. She dearly loved being an aunt to her nephews Joshua Thornton and Shane Thornton, and her niece Sommer Thornton Dyess. While she was a devoted Bulldogs fan, Kay's greatest joy was being "Granny" to her four grandchildren: Cal Finley, Emma Finley, Reid Finley, and Libby Roll. She cherished every moment with them—whether playing on the floor, visiting the park, or simply spending time together, she never missed a chance to be part of their lives. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 20, 2025, at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
