Herbert Young, age 92 of Old Avera Road, State Line, Mississippi passed from this life into heaven on Monday, May 11, 2026 at home with his loving wife of 33 years, Joan, by his side. He was born in Wayne County, Mississippi on April 3, 1934. He loved the Lord and is a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Herbert served in the US Army in Korea, boxed in the Golden Gloves in 1959, 1960 and 1962 and won 3 Mississippi state titles and a Mid South championship for welterweights. He attended Barber College, Jones County Junior College and Trenton Jewelry School. In 1967, he completed his solo pilot flight in Laurel MS.
Herbert truly enjoyed serving his customers and in 1966, opened the Barber Shop in State Line and also did watch repair. In 1980, he opened the Jewelry Store and ran Herbert’s Jewelers until 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha Jones Young and Lewis E. Young; five brothers, Coleman Young, William A. Young, John Young, Howard Young, and Hermon Young; two sisters, Catherine Mooneyham and Mary Lynn Thornton.
Herbert is survived by many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Nephews and great nephews are serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service which will occur on May 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Freeman Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Mississippi. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Paul Harris. Interment will be held at Fellowship Cemetery in Greene County, Mississippi.
