Bettye McWhorter Kennedy

Mrs. Bettye McWhorter Kennedy, 87, passed from this life Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Southern Living Specialty Care Residency in Waynesboro, MS. She was a resident of Waynesboro and a former longtime resident of State Line. She was born in Hattiesburg, MS on Friday, October 31, 1930 to V. B. McWhorter and Florence "Flossie" McWhorter. Mrs. Bettye was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro and was retired as Co-Owner and Operator of Kennedy Land Company, Inc. In 1949 she became the first Miss Hospitality of Wayneboro. She was a graduate of Ole Miss and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She served as Past President of the Fortnightly Club and was a board member of the Waynesboro Memorial Library. Mrs. Bettye enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and entertaining friends and family with her great cooking. Mrs. Kennedy is preceded in death by her mother, Florence "Flossie" McWhorter; father, V. B. McWhorter; brother, V. B. "Sonny" McWhorter, Jr.; sister, Florence Marie Arledge. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Sam C. Kennedy, Jr. of Waynesboro, MS; son, S. C. "Kurt" Kennedy, III (Elisa) of Mobile, AL; daughter, Kay Kennedy Kelly (Jerry) of Mobile, AL; 2 grandsons, Sean Patrick Kelly (Sarah), Michael Scott Kelly (Danielle); 2 granddaughters, Corinne Rebecca Kennedy, Christine Kennedy Weakley (Ryan); great grandson, Liam Patrick Kelly; great granddaughter, Harper Kennedy Weakley. Visitation for Mrs. Kennedy will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro, 701 Turner Street, Waynesboro, MS 39367. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro in Waynesboro, MS with Rev. David Hill officiating. Interment will be in Waynesboro Cemetery in Waynesboro, MS.
