Addis Mills Obituary

On Sunday evening, November 10, 2019, in the serene environment at SAADS Hospice in Mobile, Alabama, with family members by her bedside, Mrs. Addis Cochran Mills passed peacefully from this life to her Heavenly Home at the age of  90.

She was born on December 7, 1928, in Clara, Mississippi, the third of six children, to Stafford Cochran and Martha Riley Cochran. When she was only 8 years old her mother passed away leaving six young children and her father became both “Daddy and Mama” as she often said. At 16 years old, Addis married Rollo Mills in June, 1945. Their bond was strong and lasted for 72 years until his passing in January, 2018, and produced two sons, Allen and Tim.

Having become a Christian in her early 20’s, her life was fulfilled by caring for her husband, family, and friends. Having never worked outside the home for an extended period of time, her home was truly her castle; always immaculate, warm, and welcoming, and filled with the sounds of guitars, fiddles, mandolins, and melody as her husband was a maker of music.

In the late 1960’s, her husband helped form a Gospel singing group while they were living in Mobile and this became a large part of her life. Although she never was an active part of this group, she was always present in the background. She was his supporter and encourager. She was a woman of few words, but her quiet demeanor was certainly no sign of weakness for she was a woman of great strength and integrity.

After retirement and moving back home to Clara, her home became the hub off Rollo’s music. Once again, she was in the background, making certain that whomever he found to bring home that day was treated like family. This always included a deliciously prepared country-cooked meal, for her cooking would put Paula Deen’s to shame.

Her last ten years were spent close to her sons and their families in Saraland. There, during the twilight years, her life become more solitude and quiet, even though she sorely missed being able to make those quick trips to Wal-Mart, she dealt with this season with understanding and attempted patience.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Rollo Mills; parents Stafford Cochran and Martha Riley Cochran; three brothers, Walter, James, and Pete; two sisters, Dolly and Minnie; infant great granddaughter, Emily Mills. She is lovingly remembered and survived by two sons, Allen Wayne (Patricia), Tim (Donna);two grandsons, Gaston (Allison), Joel (Kelly); two granddaughters, Courtney and Peyton; four great grandchildren, Sydney Kirkland (Josh), Connor, Raegan and Asher.  All reside in Saraland, Alabama.
